New Year’s celebration in Mallorca
The plan was actually good – Christmas in the South of France – then over to Mallorca to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
I knew it wouldn’t be a beach holiday. I wanted to relax and spend New Year’s Eve at the Ballermann (a popular party area in Mallorca). A temperature of 17 or 18 degrees would have been enough for me; then I could have sunbathed naked at midday. But the weather completely ruined my plans.

First, I was practically drowned in the rain in the South of France, but things weren’t much better in Mallorca. With temperatures dropping to just 5 degrees Celsius and no sun, the Mallorca feeling was completely absent.
I had rented a lovely house in Calvia with a pool. The heating was struggling with the outside temperatures, and being naked in the house all day, as I’m used to, was simply impossible.
From my bed, I could see the gray weather every morning and had absolutely no desire to get up. I went to the nudist beach “Magoo,” but of course, there was nobody there. Except in Palma itself, almost all the shops and restaurants were closed. I figured that at least the New Year’s Eve party at the Bierkönig would be a good one.

I’d been warned beforehand – the Bierkönig gets incredibly crowded for New Year’s Eve.
I remembered it from a trip there over 10 years ago. I was also in Mallorca for New Year’s then. It was packed, the atmosphere was fantastic, and the party was great.
This time, however, it was awful, in my opinion. When I went into the Bierkönig after dinner, around 9:30 p.m., it was already so crowded that you could barely move a few meters inside. The revelers were packed so tightly that you couldn’t get any further forward. The average age was around 20. I’ve rarely seen so many drunk teenagers and young people. The smell of sweat and urine was unpleasant everywhere.
I didn’t even try to get any closer and stayed in the cold outdoor area. I was there with three friends. To get a drink, my friend waited in line at the bar for almost an hour, only to pay €48 for four beers (two 1-liter bottles and two 0.5-liter bottles). After toasting, we went to the beach and watched the fireworks in the bitter cold before going back to our accommodation.
My conclusion: I won’t be going to Mallorca or the South of France for Christmas in the next few years. I’ll either stay home or have to travel further south.
